Mateo Botero is quite of a character, and meeting him on the 9th of February at the EAFIT University of Medellin was clearly worth an 11 hour bus ride from Bogota before to head on to the Caribbean coast.
Mateo is an 18 year-old student in law. He founded his own NGO, the Club Botanico Ambiental (CBA) in his own city, Medellin, when he was just 16, and has now expanded it to three other cities in Colombia. He already participated in three Conferences of Parties and travelled worldwide as a youth advocate in the movement against climate change. He is now looking for "tons" of accreditations to bring more Colombian young environmental ambassadors to the COP 21 in Paris at the end of the year.
Over the past few years, Mateo and his crew have launched local environmental projects in the department of Antioquia (where Medellin is located) and beyond. These programs are designed to support the sustainable development of each region, to address climate change issues and to raise awareness among Colombians.
As for the COP 20 in Lima, where Mateo attended as one of the two young Colombian delegates (along with Andrea from CLIC), they will soon kick off the movement "Jovenes de Colombia camino a la COP" for the COP 21.
We are waiting for them around the corner and hope they will get as many accreditations as the number of different species of birds in Colombia.
